But what if the problem isn't the Bible? What if the problem is how we're reading the Bible?
At the next Untapped Questions, we'll explore the Biblical texts that most directly address homosexuality, and we'll talk about why our church is affirming of LGBT Christians. It's not because we don't take the Bible seriously or choose to ignore those texts that we find troubling. It's precisely because we take the Bible seriously and have chosen to study and interpret it with deep respect that we find a mandate in Scripture to welcome and affirm people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.
If you want to read ahead a bit, here are the passages we'll be discussing:
Genesis 19:4–8 and Judges 19
Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13
First Corinthians 6:9–10 and 1 Timothy 1:9–10
As we explore these passages, we'll consider contextual views of human sexuality and gender, hospitality and relationship, and common practices and beliefs of each time period. Come with your thinking caps firmly affixed because we're diving deep into scripture, history, anthropology, theology, psychology, and maybe a few other -ologies.
