The 221st General Assembly of the PC (USA) met in Detroit June 14-21.
Some of you might be wondering, "What did the General Assembly do?"
Others might be wondering, "What is a General Assembly?"
And still others might wonder, "Why should I care?"
Well, we hope to discuss all of those wonderings at our next Untapped Questions gathering. We'll talk about Presbyterian government and how the General Assembly fits into it, and we'll address the work of the 221st General Assembly, including decisions regarding:
A new world-wide mission initiative called "Educate a Child, Transform the World"
Divestment from three corporations engaging in "non-peaceful pursuits" in Israel
Taking action against gun violence
Adding a new confession to our Book of Confessions
and allowing pastors to perform "any such marriage the Holy Spirit calls them to perform," including marriage for same-sex couples in states where it is legal.
As to why you should care...several of this assembly's decisions have made headlines, and as a Presbyterian, you'll want to know a bit about these issues when they come up in conversation, especially the issues around marriage and divestment.
If you want to read up on the issues, watch video of the debates, and generally learn more about what went on, below are some resources to check out: http://oga.pcusa.org/section/ga/ga/
