Help Fund the Taylor Memorial
GEORGE AND ELIZA TAYLOR GRAVE MONUMENT
We are asking our congregation to contribute to a monument for the unmarked graves of George and Eliza Taylor, who died in 1901 and 1902. The Taylors were former slaves who escaped to Michigan and were the first African-Americans to own property in Birmingham. They were early members of our church and active members as we can tell from our church archives.
Contribution toward purchase and placement of a joint grave monument for the Taylors in Greenwood Cemetery, Birmingham, with a large base and upright tablet consistent with the other monuments used in the cemetery, total needed: $4,700. Commitments received thus far: $2,000. (Any excess funds will go to a Greenwood Cemetery preservation account with the Friends of the Birmingham Museum, a 501c3 non-profit organization.) |
