The Organ
at FPC
A
new 4-manual, 53 rank Nichols and Simpson pipe organ will be
installed in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, beginning
in June 2008.
It will replace an instrument
by Casavant Freres Limited of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, which was
installed in 1952. The Virtuoso organist Virgil Fox dedicated the
37-stop instrument, and it faithfully served the congregation for
more than 50 years. After several bouts with an ever-failing
console, the Session of First Presbyterian Church approved an Organ
Study Team to investigate options for the future of the organ. The
committee's work included an investigation of the possibilities of
redesigning the chancel area in the sanctuary to be more sympathetic
to the varied needs of our congregation's worship now and in the
future. In August of 2003, the Session enthusiastically approved the
continued planning of a capital project so that the Organ Study Team
could officially begin a relationship with Nichols and Simpson Organ
Builders of Little Rock, Arkansas, to result in the installation of
a new pipe organ. Collaboration with nationally renown liturgical
consultant Terry Byrd Eason Design from Chapel Hill, North Carolina
and the acoustical consulting firm of Scott Riedel and Associates
resulted in the Organ Study Team's February 2004 report to the
Session on a detailed plan of action for this exciting project. This
plan was unanimously supported by the Session as was a request to
embark upon a congregation-wide capital campaign to raise the funds
necessary to support this project. Local architect Constantine
George Pappas was added to the team in 2005.
The capital campaign,
Rejoice & Renew!, has been very successful, and the
congregation of First Presbyterian Church is excited about the
opportunities that await. The sanctuary is currently open, and the organ is being built in Little Rock.
