Alcott School Ministry Update
In December our hospitality team provided a lovely morning coffee and breakfast foods for the Alcott staff. Shana Burnett, the principal at Alcott, presented our volunteers with a certificate of appreciation for an “outstanding partnership that enhances academic achievement for children.” This partnership has indeed exceeded both the expectations of the Alcott staff as well as ours here at the church. As our lives have become interwoven, God has provided a connection of love and grace that has nurtured all those involved — the children, the Alcott staff, and our faith community in countless ways. This truly is an amazing community of generous people. Many of you have served as weekly tutors for children in K–5th grades. Others have provided staff support, coordination of all the volunteers, and numerous special projects have grown out of our connections with one another. Some of them include:

  • The sweatshirts collected at Advent by Candlelight and at the 3:00 service on Christmas Eve, along with the many coats and boots are keeping the children at Alcott warm this winter.

  • Wider Church Outreach provided funds for a wonderful computer lab which opened this fall.

  • A grant from the Filmer Foundation has given us the funding and opportunity to provide the children with a field trip to see the play, Lion King.

  • The Filmer grant has funded four hours of music and art therapy per week provided by Variety FAR.

  • A third portion of the Filmer grant has made possible a new Writer’s Workshop program which will culminate in an author’s day and a compilation of the pieces written by children from kindergarten through 5th grades.

  • Many of you have prayed for this ministry and some have supported it with financial gifts.

What began as a vision of mission outreach without either a committee to back it or a line item in the budget, has blossomed into a ministry of presence blessing both our community of faith as well as Alcott Elementary School. If you would like to learn more about opportunities to participate, please contact either Kathy Nyberg at 248-644-2096 or Cindy Merten at 248-644-2087 ext. 145.
