Confirmation
Overview
Our Confirmation program is designed to prepare young people for the responsibilities of church membership, participation in the community of Christian faith, and the living out of their Christian vocation.
Our program takes two years to complete. There are several reasons behind this two-year commitment:
- It takes a full year to adequately teach the church’s traditions and doctrinal beliefs;
- Youth should have a full year after understanding the tradition and beliefs to practice and apply their faith in their lives;
- Youth should have a full year to discern their commitment to the community of faith;
- The two-year model will balance education and experience, study and relationship-building;
- Youth will be Confirmed in 9th grade, rather than 8th, when they will have gained more maturity for the making of this decision.
The first year of the program focuses on learning the church’s tradition – doctrinal beliefs, history, worship and sacraments. The class meets weekly at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings.
The second year focuses on practice and application of the Christian faith in the Presbyterian tradition. Students work closely with their Covenant Partners during this year to complete monthly assignments pertaining to faith practice, service, and Christian living. The class meets monthly to discuss assignments and work on group activities. They will be examined by Session and Confirmed in May of this second year.
