Shepherd Job Description

Shepherd Job Description

Your presence each week is essential. You are the one who will be with the children the whole school year nurturing and guiding their spiritual growth by making them fell warm and welcome along the journey. You will guide a group of children to the various workshops each Sunday morning. The Shepherd’s detailed responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Meeting: Attend the Unit Teacher/Shepherd meeting prior to the start of each rotation (approx. once every 4 or 5 weeks). For most of the units, the meeting is scheduled at 9 AM on Sunday mornings. At this meeting, you will receive an overall lesson plan for the unit, receive any special Shepherd instructions, and meet the other team members for the rotation.

  2. Welcome and Guide: Arrive by 9:20 to greet children and sit with them on the stage (while in Knox). They will then proceed to the Red Sea Cinema where they’ll sit in their designated areas for each class. Sit among the children and participate with them. We are asking each Shepherd to wear a costume color coordinated with the color of the grade (Kindergarten – Red, 1st Grade – Orange, 2nd Grade – Yellow, 3rd Grade – Green, 4th Grade – Blue, 5th Grade – Purple.)

  3. Take attendance: Record attendance on the sheets found in your folder and place one on the hook in the doorway just outside the room. Fill out an information form on any child not on your attendance list. You will receive a list when families have had opportunity to register.

  4. Name tags: Make sure every child has a nametag with a colored dot. If they do not have one, make a temporary one for him/her and drop a note for Barbara Russell in the basket located in the main office.

  5. Personal Contact: Get to know each child. Call the children by name. They need to see a familiar, friendly face as they visit a different room each week.

  6. Open and Close with Prayer: Invite the children to share things for which they are thankful and special prayer requests. When someone offers a thanksgiving, have them all say “Thanks be to God,” and when a prayer is requested for someone, say “Lord, hear our prayer.” In most lessons a closing prayer is provided for your use. Have them repeat after you. Our hope is to use this prayer on Family Worship Sunday.

  7. Send cards: When a child is absent, send a post card found in your bag. Birthday cards and a list of the kid’s birthdays, addresses, phone numbers and parents’ names are also in each bag.

  8. Discipline: Encourage cooperation, proper conduct, and respect for the teacher, Shepherd and peers. If there are discipline problems you are unable to handle, please see Cindy Merten.

  9. Evaluation: Please write on the packets you are given each rotation any comments, suggestions, etc. you may have. This will help us immensely with planning future lessons. Return your packets to Cindy Merten at the end of each rotation.

  10. If you find you will be absent at the last minute please call Cindy at 248-644-2087×145 and 248-321-0125 and leave a message.
